ITALY – John Merchant (6-0, 180, SG, Middletown, NY, USA, Alessandro Maurro ) has signed a professional contract with Piacenza Basketball Club in Italy. He returns to Italy to play under the direction of head coach Alessandro Mambretti.
In 2014-15, Merchant played with Legnano Knights Castellanza in Serie A2 League (Italy). He was the first American player to ever sign with this club.
Merchant is a former top performer at multiple iBall exposure opportunities. At iBPC 2013, Merchant led the tournament with 3.5 steals per game. Merchant was also named to the All-Star Team at the 2013 iBall FOCUS Camp and claimed the #1 Overall Athlete at the 2013 iBall Pro Combine where his lateral lane shuttle and multi-directional movement were both best at camp according to professional training staff at MAXOUT.
Merchant’s collegiate career was with the Dowling Golden Lions where he played under the direction of head coach John Mateyko. Over his career, he averaged an impressive 14 pts, 4 reb, and 2.4 assists in NCAAD2.
