The Jersey Expressions is a 1st year franchise in the newly formed Women’s American Basketball Association (WABA- http://www.WABABB.com (http://www.wababb.com/)). This will be the inaugural season for the WABA, though last year exhibition games were played as a prelude to the start of the ‘Official’ season.
The Expressions will play in the Women’s Northeast division of the WABA. Teams will be based in Harlem, Boston, Jersey City, Virginia, Philadelphia, and NYC. 20 total teams are planned for the league. “There’s no doubt about it; the popularity of women’s basketball is growing at a phenomenal rate at the youth, high school, college and professional level,” said Joe Newman, ABA CEO. “The skill levels of today’s women players are tremendous. The timing is right.”

I’m excited for the history of New Jersey women’s basketball.” said Marsha Blount, co-owner of the Jersey City Express who has put together an talent-rich, well-connected, and experienced cast of staff and basketball personnel. Expressions staff has accomplishments and experience from Women’s NCAA All-American, Women’s Professionals overseas, the WNBA and even a Women’s Olympian!
The Jersey Expressions will be the first Women’s professional team that the state has ever seen. Blount is not new to running successful professional basketball teams. She became the first African-American Woman to own and operate a franchise in the men’s ABA league, the Jersey City Express. In 2013 the Jersey Express competed for the ABA men’s league title.
Blount’s team will comprise of a mix of local and imported talent. “I’m a fan a talented basketball players, and my goal is to put the best talent on the floor and win the championship in the first year.”

Marsha Blount, Co-owner and President – Originally from Mount Vernon, NY, Marsha led her high school basketball team to the 1st ever NY State Title, by going undefeated at 26-0! After winning tournament MVP, she went on to play for Division 1, Queens College. After college, she turned down an overseas opportunity, to begin her coaching career. Leading her championship women’s travel, and semi-pro teams around the country, laying the foundation for the WNBA
Rosetta Gilford, Player Development- NCAA All American, Newark Athletic Hall of fame, Cheyney University Hall of Fame, Lead nation in scoring for Men and Women at Essex County College (43 ppg), former Harlem Globetrotter, Graduate Assistant Coach Tennessee Tech University, played Professional Basketball in Spain, Italy and Germany, Head Coach of West Side High School Girl’s Basketball Team.

Gail Marquis ‘Ms. World’ Olympian, Talent Evaluator – NYC Basketball Hall of Fame, OLYMPIC SILVER MEDALIST, nicknamed “Ms. World” for her international fame as a pioneer in women’s basketball, has achieved many firsts. When she was a power forward on the USA Olympic Team that won a silver medal in Montreal in 1976, it was the first time women’s basketball had been included as an Olympic sport.
