Coach Doaty on the Complexity of Basketball Stardom

Coach Randal S. Doaty
Focus & Attitude Coach

One of the things that is immediately evident when I consult with basketball coaches about focus and attitude issues on a basketball team is stardom. I am referring to the presence of those supernaturally gifted athletes who shine brightly on the team. They are the focus of media attention, the apple of the coach’s eye and the envy of every other player on the team. They are for all intent and purposes the star of the team – the basketball superman or superwoman who is expected to save the day.

If you are a coach hoping for an athletic phenomenon, let me warn you in advance that these folks can come with a steep price. The stability of the focus and attitude of a team is often compromised by these larger than life figures on the court. Their potential contribution to the team is an intoxicating notion for any coach who has their eye on a championship trophy. However, I have watched as the blinding light of these bright stars have led many a team off track and dashed hopes of winning the gold.

I am not suggesting that you should toss these basketball wonders to the side. If you hope to capture the energy of these stars, you will need to have a deliberate approach to the disparity between them and the other players. Team chemistry and squad combinations needs to be managed more closely. Some coaches try to do this behind the scenes. In my experience, that approach rarely works. The mental performance of your team will depend upon the approach your coaching staff takes when balancing the brightness of a basketball star.

If you are a basketball star who is reading this post, you might want to take heed to these words. Every star eventually burns out – in space or on the court. If you are trying to find a team that will be a perfect fit for you, be sure you are looking for a coaching staff that knows how to integrate your abilities into the team chemistry. The other four players on the court will ultimately determine how brightly you can shine. Your future depends upon coaches who know how to help you manage your special gift and blend it into the team chemistry.
